阿拉斯加位於北美大陸西北部，面積151.9萬平方公里。土著民族為印第安人，愛斯基摩人和阿留申人。17—18世紀阿拉斯加被俄國的「土地開拓者」發現，自18世紀80年代起沙俄在此建造居民點。1798年成立俄羅斯美洲公司（俄美公司），獨家經營漁獵場並開採礦物。1867年阿拉斯加被沙皇政府賣給美國。1884年以前屬美國軍事管轄，以後為美國的一個地區。1959年成為美國的第49州。阿拉斯加有北美最高峰——海拔6193米的麥金利山。阿拉斯加灣在阿拉斯加半島和溫哥華之間，灣口寬2200公里，深達5659米，還有衛護海灣的弧形屏障阿留申群島。阿拉斯加1/3的面積位於北極圈內，氣候嚴寒，除南部沿岸外，年平均溫度在0℃以下，可這塊「不毛之地」卻擁有豐富的地下寶藏：石油、金、銅、鉑、銀等。特別是北極地區濱海凹陷地帶為石炭紀以及三疊紀和白堊紀地層，石油和天然氣儲量極大。此外，太平洋東北部暖流使阿拉斯加南部沿海峽灣島嶼成為世界著名漁場，盛產鮭魚和大比目魚。
顯然，阿拉斯加是塊寶地。可沙俄為什麼要賣掉它？美國又是怎樣把它弄到手的呢？
1868年8月男爵交給俄羅斯國庫一張「720萬美元全部收訖」的憑據，並稱錢已轉入紐約某銀行，可據該銀行向美國國會作證時確認匯入銀行的錢只有703.5萬美元。不用說，16.5萬美元已裝進外交代表的腰包。
這位男爵的最後命運像個謎。1869年5月，他寫信給外務部的友人，說希望得到兩年的休假，信中充滿了恐懼和憂傷。一個把手伸進皇上口袋裡（應當說是老百姓的飯碗裡！）的人會有什麼下場呢？終於斯捷克利男爵失蹤了，在俄國失去了他的蹤跡，在國外也找不到他……
